What Is RON95, and Why Was It Subsidised?

Why Is the RON95 Subsidy Being Restructured?
Previously, Malaysia used a blanket subsidy model where everyone, including foreigners and high-income earners needed to pay subsidised prices. While well-intended, this cost the government billions each year and disproportionately benefited those outside the intended groups.
From 2025, the government will introduce Budi Madani RON95 (BUDI95), expected to save up to RM2 billion to RM4 billion annually according to The Edge Malaysia.
