If you’ve been behind the wheel for over five years, chances are you’ve picked up solid driving habits – but when was the last time you checked your tyres?
Tyres are your vehicle’s only contact with the road, and after half a decade of driving, it’s easy to underestimate their importance. Tyre wear, misalignment, and neglect are among the top reasons for roadside emergencies. And with festive balik kampung trips, work commutes, and weekend drives, your tyres go through more than you think.
✅ Pro Tip: Before heading out on your next journey, stop by a BHPetrol station – not only for a fuel top-up but to give your tyres a quick visual check while enjoying exclusive promotions on drinks and snacks through the BHPetrol eCard App!
Check Tyre Tread Depth
Bald tyres are not only illegal but dangerous. The tread helps maintain grip, especially on wet roads.
- Legal limit in Malaysia: 1.6mm tread depth, it is advisable to have your tyre replaced once it reaches 2mm and the minimum tread depth commonly advised by tyre and safety experts is 3mm.
- Use a tread depth gauge or the “10 sen coin test” – stick the 10 sen coin with the “BANK NEGARA MALAYSIA” facing upside down and facing you. Check in various locations of the tread. If you can see the whole letter, then it is time for a change.
Maintain Proper Tyre Pressure
Under-inflated or over-inflated tyres can cause poor handling, reduce fuel efficiency, and lead to blowouts.
- Check tyre pressure at least once a month
- Refer to your vehicle’s manual or the sticker (usually on the driver’s door) for the recommended PSI
- For the most accurate reading, check when tyres are cold.

Inspect for Cracks, Bulges, and Foreign Objects
After years of road trips and city drives, tyres can develop damage that isn’t always obvious.
- Look for sidewall cracks, cuts, or bulges
- Check for embedded nails or stones
- If unsure, ask a professional to inspect them
Don’t Forget the Spare
Your spare tyre is useless if it’s flat when you need it. After 5+ years, it’s often the most neglected tyre.
- Check it every few months for air and cracks
- Make sure your jack and tools are present and working
Consider Tyre Alignment & Balancing
If your car drifts to one side or your steering vibrates at high speeds, it could be a sign of poor alignment or imbalance.
- Schedule a tyre alignment once a year, or whenever you hit a large pothole or kerb
- Balancing ensures your tyres wear evenly and prolong their lifespan
Know When to Replace Your Tyres
Even if your tread looks fine, rubber ages over time.
- Most manufacturers recommend replacing tyres every 6 years, regardless of mileage
- Check the DOT code on your tyre (the last four digits show the manufacturing week and year)
