General FAQs
How is my Motor Insurance premium calculated?
Effective 1 July 2017, motor insurance in Malaysia has been de-tariffed. Insurance companies will be able to practice risk-based pricing and use their own method to calculate premiums for car insurance, based on the risk profile of the customer. For more information on motor insurance detariffication and how it affects you,
here.
How do I decide what value to insure my car for?
- Newly purchased vehicle : The insured value should be equivalent to the purchase price.
- Previously registered vehicle: The insured value should be equivalent to the ‘market value’.
Alternatively, you can contact AXA Customer Service at 03-2170 8282 for assistance in determining the insured value of your car.
What is the information required to apply for Motor Insurance?
Please ensure you have your Vehicle Registration Number before applying.
Can I purchase a Third Party Cover with Motor Insurance?
Motor Insurance only offers a comprehensive coverage which offers the widest form of coverage. The policy covers loss or damage to or theft of the vehicle and the liability to third parties for death or bodily injury as well as damage to property.
Can I purchase Motor Insurance to cover my motorcycle or commercial vehicle?
Currently, you can only insure your Private Car with Motor Insurance.
What is a “No Claim Discount” (NCD)?
If you are insured under a comprehensive coverage for 12 consecutive months with no claim made on your policy, either by yourself or a third party, you will be entitled to a No Claim Discount (NCD) upon renewal of your policy.
Period of Insurance |
NCD % for private car |
After the 1st year of insurance |
25% |
After the 2nd year of insurance |
30% |
After the 3rd year of insurance |
38.33% |
After the 4th year of insurance |
45% |
After the 5th year of insurance |
55% |
The percentage of your NCD increases with the number of claim free years. Your NCD will revert back to 0%, if you or a third party has made a claim on your Motor Insurance during the period of cover, with the exception of extended cover for Windscreen and No-fault Own Damage claims.
Please contact AXA Customer Service at 03-2170 8282 if you need to make a No-fault Own Damage claim against your policy.
Will I have NCD if this is my first time purchasing a car?
If you are buying a car for the first time, you will not enjoy NCD on your Motor Insurance for the first year. However, when you have at least one claims-free year, you will be rewarded with a 25% NCD on your premium upon renewal.
Can I transfer my NCD to another vehicle?
If you are changing your car, your NCD can be transferred to the new car you are purchasing. If you do not transfer your NCD to another car, your NCD entitlement level will drop one level each year, until it reaches 0%.However if you are purchasing an additional car, you cannot apply your NCD to both cars – you will need to build up a new NCD on one of the cars. You are also not allowed to transfer your NCD to another person.
Can I extend my Motor Insurance to cover windscreen, strike/riot, flood and others?
Yes, to enhance your standard cover, you may add any of the additional coverage listed below:
- Driver’s & Passengers’ Personal Accident (DPPA)
- Breakage of glass in windscreen, window or sunroof

Are there any vehicles that require special consideration prior to acceptance?
Yes, special consideration applies to selected vehicles such as 4 wheel drives (4WD), luxury vehicles and sports/coupe models which result in higher loading and/or higher excess.
What is an ‘excess’?
An ‘excess’ is the amount of loss you have to bear before the insurer will pay for the balance of your vehicle damage claim. For example, if your Motor Insurance excess is RM200, you will have to pay for the first RM200 of any claim. You are not entitled to claim for an accident that results in damage below this amount. Excesses help to keep insurers’ administration costs lower by reducing the number of small claims, which in turn allow insurers to offer you with lower premiums.
How is my ‘excess’ level decided?
Excess levels are set at the discretion of the insurer. There are two types of excess levels:’
Compulsory Excess‘ of RM400 is applicable if your vehicle is driven by a person:
- who is under the age of 21 years
- who is the holder of a Provisional Driving Licence (L-Licence)
- who is the holder of a Probationary Driving Licence (P-Licence)
- who is less than the age of 21 years and/or the holder of a Provisional Driving Licence (L-Licence) and/or the holder of a Probationary Driving Licence (P-Licence)
‘
Other Excess‘ will be stated in the Schedule, where applicable.
Can I still enjoy no excess if I have made claims before?
It depends as different terms may have to be applied if you have made claims (excluding Windscreen and Knock-for-Knock claims) during the past 3 years. The most commonly used factors are your age, cubic capacity (engine CC), specific claims experience of your vehicle and re-conditioned vehicle. AXA can apply a loading on you to ensure that the amount charged commensurate with the risk borne.
Where can I find my BHPetrol eCard number?
Your BHPetrol eCard number is the 16 digit number printed on the front of your BHPetrol eCard. If you are eCard mobile app user, you can find your eCard number in your profile page.
How will the reward points be allocated to my BHPetrol eCard?
